Over the course of two sidelong compositions, Theodore Schafer processes the sound of piano mallets and presents an opportunity to eavesdrop on a private recital. Notes ring and bounce to softened rhythms, disassembled and rearranged with the scale of the keys swirling around a focal point that can't quite be determined. The two pieces convey drastically different senses of space. "Garden Loop" moves like shadows cast by a lantern in the moonlit courtyard, turning around corners and enveloping gaps in places that were once visible. "Nola" hovers like an omnipresent aura, always close by but only detectable as a distant cloud.
